چکیده

Natural variability in susceptibility of field collected rice yellow stem borer (Scirpophaga incertulas) and rice leaffolder (Cnaphalocrocis medinalis) to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) δ-endotoxins was investigated to establish a geographic baseline for comparison of future population responses to the increased use of Bt based insect control products like Bt transgenic rice and commercial formulations. Populations of S. incertulas and C. medinalis were evaluated for their susceptibility to purified Bt Cry1Aa, Cry1Ab, Cry1Ac, Cry1C and Cry2A toxins. The range of LC50's among selected populations in response to variety of different Bt toxins were between 19-88 fold for S. incertulas and 2-20 fold for C. medinalis. The data provide a strong basis for monitoring changes in susceptibility of S. incertulas and C. medinalis populations to future use of Bt toxins in Bt rice program.

Impact of insect-resistant transgenic rice on target insect pests and non-target arthropods in China

Progress on the research and development of insect-resistant transgenic rice, especially expressing insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), in China has been rapid in recent years. A number of insect-resistant transgenic rice lines/varieties have passed restricted and enlarged field testing, and several have been approved for productive testing since 2002 in China, although none...

Assessment of Yield Loss in Rice due to Yellow Stem Borer, Scirpophaga incertulas, Using Simulation Models

The yield loss simulation (YLS) and the MACROS LIQ.CSM models were used to simulate the effect of stem borer damage at a detillering rate of 5, 15, 30, 60% at vegetative, panicle initiation and grain filing stages, on yield of rice cultivar?s Ratna. This stem borer damage during vegetative and panicle initiation stages was not simulated appropriately by both the models. Relatively MACROS simul...

Field survey and greenhouse evaluation of non-rice host plants of the striped stem borer, Chilo suppressalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), as refuges for resistance management of rice transformed with Bacillus thuringiensis toxin genes.

The striped stem borer, Chilo suppressalis (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), is the most abundant stem borer of rice Oryza sativa L. (Poaceae) in temperate Asia. Chilo suppressalis also occurs throughout the tropical rice-growing areas of Asia, where it is generally second in abundance to the yellow stem borer, Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) (Pathak & Khan, 1994). Ste...

Agrobacterium-transformed rice plants expressing synthetic cryIA(b) and cryIA(c) genes are highly toxic to striped stem borer and yellow stem borer.

Over 2,600 transgenic rice plants in nine strains were regenerated from >500 independently selected hygromycin-resistant calli after Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The plants were transformed with fully modified (plant codon optimized) versions of two synthetic cryIA(b) and cryIA(c) coding sequences from Bacillus thuringiensis as well as the hph and gus genes, coding for hygromycin phos...

Pyramiding and evaluation of both a foreign Bacillus thuringiensis and a Lysine-rich protein gene in the elite indica rice 9311

Gene pyramiding is an efficient approach for the genetic improvement of multiple agronomic traits simultaneously. In this study, we pyramided two foreign genes, cry1Ac driven by the rice Actin I promoter, and lysine-rich protein (LRP), driven by the endosperm-specific GLUTELIN1 (GT1) promoter, into the elite indica cultivar 9311. These two genes were chosen in an attempt to enhance insect-resis...
